Devizes famous for the story of the moonrakers men who were smugglers that hid their bounty
in the pond in Devizes (The Crammer). One moonlit night when officials spotted them dragging the The Crammer for their illicit
goods they claimed to be trying to rake the moon out of the pond!
Once the home of many soldiers liitle remains of its military past with barracks being built upon by housing
or trading estates.
The town straddles the Kennet and Avon Canal which runs from Bristol towards London. This provides a good
cycle route along the towpath as well asboating facilities.
