It was here in 1794 that the first sod was cut for the canal. A short distance along the path you can reach the the Avoncliffe aqueduct and a lovely pub overlooking a picturesque weir. For the more adventurous you can continue on to Bath and join up with the Avon river or go East to explore the Caen Locks at Devizes.

The Lock Inn, at the bottom of the Bradford Lock, is a popular café/restaurant where you can begin lovely walks along the canal or hire a bicycle. You can enjoy lunch, evening meals or afternoon teas alongside the canal in a stationary canal boat or cabin.

Trinity Church

Explore Trinity Church in the town centre, the famous Saxon Church of St Laurence and of course the most impressive building in the town the 14th Century medieval tithe barn. This was originally used to collect taxes but now forms part of Barton Farm Country Park. The town bridge, which dates back to Norman times, and the Chapel are Grade I listed buildings. The Chapel was once used as the town’s lock-up.

Make sure you take time to look at the small weaver\'s cottages in Bradford-on-Avon, which are balanced on the side of a steep hill. Notice how the South facing windows on the weaver’s cottages are very large. This was to ensure the weavers had the maximum amount of light to complete their work.

Also in this area is the Shambles where you will find a number of individual shops. Named after the higgledy piggledy buildings on the narrow street.

Interesting facts

Bradford is the headquarters of the Alex Moulton bicycle company. Henry Shrapnel was born in the town and was a weapons inventor. Popular Indie band Jesus Jones came from Bradford. The tithe barn was used as part of the set for the Sherrif of Nottingham’s throne room in Robin Hood, which also featured Sean Connery’s son. Several world champion canoeists have come from the Bradford-on-Avon Rowing Club.

Bradford-on-Avon has a number of primary schools and a secondary school, St Laurence. In the grounds of the school is the Wiltshire Music School that holds concerts, workshops as well as private and curriculum based music lessons. There is also a recording studio.

Thursday mornings in Bradford-on-Avon you will find the fantastic market in the library car park. The stalls vary week to week but you will certainly find some great things to buy.

Bradford-on-Avon is a hive of community activity all year round with music concerts, arts exhibitions and beer festivals. This along with the town’s historic buildings, waterways and super countryside makes Bradford an excellent place to visit.

Make sure you visit the Woolley Festival, now in it’s 11th year, being held on Saturday 18th July. Join in the fun for all the family, which includes music, poetry, comedy, children’s entertainment, drum workshops, stalls and refreshments and much much more!!

This guide has been kindly written by Emma Windsor. Devizes is a small market town in the heart of Wiltshire. It has kept its market character with weekly indoor and outdoor markets and a monthly farmers market (every 1st Saturday of the month).

It hasn’t lost its individual character as there are still a variety of independent shops. There is also a museum (with free entry on Sundays), a castle (which, sadly, you can only admire from afar) and Wadsworth Brewery, which still delivers the beer to its pubs with Shire horses (apart from 2 weeks in August, when the horses go on holidays). There are several old churches, with St Mary’s and St John’s Church dating back to the 12th century.

Then there is the Crammar which is famous for the story of the Moonrakers men who were smugglers that hid their bounty in the pond in Devizes (The Crammer). One moonlit night when officials spotted them dragging the Crammer for their illicit goods they claimed to be trying to rake the moon out of the pond!

If the small town market character does not appeal to you, Devizes is situated centrally between Swindon, Salisbury and Bath, which can be reached within ¾ hrs by car or there are bus connections.

The countryside around Devizes is also worth a visit. There is Roundway Hill, where you can find the latest addition to the Wiltshire White Horses and you can walk on the same ground where Oliver Cromwell defeated the Royalist in 1643. The tower of St James’ Church in Devizes still shows the cannon holes of the attempts to attack the castle. The Sealed Knot Society sometimes re-enacts the battle of Roundway Down.

If you get the chance to see it, do so as it’s well worth it! Devizes’ other claim to fame are the locks. The Kennet and Avon canal runs through Devizes and there are 29 locks along the canal, but 16 of them are on a small stretch at Caen Hill. It takes about 5-6 hours to travel by boat through those locks. For those who like to go out in the evenings, there are a variety of pubs and restaurants. Devizes also has a cinema, a theatre and a leisure centre. I sometimes hear people say there is nothing to do in Devizes. I disagree, Devizes has something for everyone!

This article has been written by Angelika Davey who both teaches and translates German language.

You can find out more by visiting her website - click here
','page_metakeyword_devizes':'devizes,wiltshire,town guide, kennet and avon,canal,moonrakers,','page_metadescr_devizes':'A brief guide to Devizes in the county of Wiltshire. Building of this new town began in 1220 and was the brainchild of Richard Poore Bishop of Old Sarum. Old Sarum had been a major centre of administration and government since Norman times and is situated on the site of an old iron age hill fort about two miles from the present city. The plan was quite simple; to create a new commercial centre which would in turn fund the building of the most beautiful cathedral in England. The venture was extremely successful. The cathedral was built and consecrated in only 38 years and both the town merchants and clergy prospered throughout the medieval period, with Salisbury becoming one of the richest cities in the kingdom.

Today the city is a charming market town, its beautiful medieval buildings quite unspoilt by the modern world. The 14th century spire of Salisbury cathedral is the tallest in England and still dominates the city. In the city centre you can wander around the market on Tuesdays and Saturdays or enjoy a leisurely coffee in one of the many pavement cafes. There are a good variety of shops many of them independent retailers. For those that want to escape the hubbub of the city centre there is the peace and tranquillity of the cathedral close. It is the largest cathedral close in the country, containing two museums, houses open to the public, and good places to eat. The cathedral is one of the finest examples of Early English Gothic building in the world and it is the home of Magna Carta, one of the most important documents in British history. Or take a walk on the town path across the Harnham water meadows where the view of the cathedral was voted the best view of in Britain in 2002. A view that has not changed in almost one thousand years.

Stonehenge is only 8 miles from Salisbury and if you want to see another impressive stone circle Avebury is only 20 miles away. Between these two important Neolithic sites there are always plenty of crop circles to discover during the summer months. The countryside and villages around Salisbury are charming with their brick and flint cottages topped by straw thatch they are chocolate box pretty. Salisbury is also within easy reach of many other interesting tourist destinations. London Bath Bristol Exeter and Cardiff can be reached in less than 2 hours by train. The New Forest and the coast are less than one hours drive away. It is a great centre in which to base a holiday and have easy access to the West Country, South Coast and London while staying in a charming quiet little city with all modern amenities.

This guide has been contributed by Rowena Ingram of Pear Tree Serviced Apartments
','page_metakeyword_salisbury':'salisbury,wiltshire,','page_metadescr_salisbury':'A brief guide to Salisbury in the county of Wiltshire.
